Disneyesque noodling spoiled by indie rambling.

Unlike many of you, I rarely get a chance to listen to newish music, but today I've had a very healthy dose thanks to Paul Ford's article. I have not listened enough to make recommendations, but I thought I should share, nonetheless. Favorite review so far:

I don't know which is the worse in the following story:
http://www.alternet.org/movies/43785/ The fact that there are so many country music fans that demographically - according to their socio-economic levels, get fucked by this current administration moreso than most (yet continually vote these shithogs into office) - or, the poor Dixie Chicks who got pilloried for speaking their minds by these same ignorant fucks, OR the goodamned Cumulus radio stations around the US who shitcanned their djs for ignoring the "boycott" against playing the Dixie Chicks. |

This is sorta from the first rock is dead thread that I posted which by the way was the very first post I ever made her way back about a year ago.
Anyways in the recent edition of American Heritage there is an article about the year 1964 and how that year was the "real" start of the 60's. The article started out saying that before the Beatles and before 1964 rock music was bland pop and the charts were dominated by teen idols and pop novelties. Wrong so wrong. Lets see here Girl groups/Brill Building Pop Surf/Instro Motown Stax The Four Seasons Doo Wop Ray Charles, Solomon Burke, Jackie Wilson Sam Cooke, Irma Thomas, The Drifters, Etta James, The Impressions, Gene Pitney, Roy Orbison, Del Shannon, Gary U.S. Bonds yeah rock was so dead in the early 60's. I dont think so as you can see |

That is the title of Rhino's new box that comes out tomorrow. A four CD set of soul and early funk from the late 60's to mid 70's. Not loaded but all the big hits but some gems for sure. In other words another cool box we have to spend our hard earned cash on. Go to Rhino's webpage for a full track listing. Right now I dont have the time to list all the tunes.

EMI has sold the famous Capitol tower to a real estate firm in NYC. This is the 50th anniversary of the tower that was built to look like a stack of records with a needle on top. Couldnt find the name of the firm but I thought I would pass this along just the same |

I've been soliciting lists of people's Top 20 Greatest Rock-Era Bands Ever (GREBE) (not the avian "grebe") (not necessarily "rock" bands, because then i'd have to define "rock") over at my sisyphus and the cuckoo clock speech and throwing everything into a spreadsheet to come up with an amalgamated list of the Top Whatever Number Greatest Rock-Era Bands Ever list.

The internets is a series of tubes stuffed by obsessed people with goodies. Like this, a listing of "space age pop" albums available in MP3 form on the web right at the moment. Most of these are not in print, are not being sold in CD form, or any other form except as used records.
Do you want Dick Hyman's "The Man from O.R.G.A.N." in your thingPod? I know I do. I just stuck Dick right in there. Discuss the ethics, and/or whether or not interest in this music should have died with the '90s. |
