Back from Asheville Land

Howdy all.

We are back from vacation, and I've gotta say that the only thing that made coming back appealling was seeing you-all again.  Why the hades do we all live up here in the flatlands?!

We had a time fine as wine and got to see Sonic Youth, as well as this crazybeautiful Swedish prog/psych band called DUNGEN

http://www.dungen-music.com/ramar/index_EN.htm

These Swedes were THE WHIP!  Got the tip from the sweetest record store dudes ever at Harvest of Asheville:

http://www.harvest-records.com/about.php

Actually, the Matt and Mark know shitloads about music, and have the most refreshing lack o' attitude and gen-yoo-wine enthusiasm for what they're doing, they made this old broadie's heart all warm and nostalgic…lest you give 'em the stink-eye, it ain't no hippie store.  THAT would be karmasonics downtown!~QUANTUMWEST ASHEVILLE IS WHERE IT'S ATBOYEEEEE.

Also picked up a used Thorens turntable and ate a whole ass-load of good good good low country grub.  And eyeful of prettiness.  And relaxation.  and…and….oh, yeah!  Dusty Scoot also picked up a nice case of poison oak or the like.  He also made me all wibbly-kneed with laughter much of the week, with stupid crap like following me way too close around the house singing (To the tune of "Black Coffee In Bed")   "Frank!  Frank!  Frank!  Frank Black in bed!!!" just to make me squirm.  I love he.

….I did actually miss you-all, though.

Did you get us anything?

Did you get us anything? Clever t-shirts with “How To Speak Redneck” type stuff on them?

very envious

of your Dungen-ing.

I am liking them too well.

Need the full skinny on how bad-freaking-ass they were. Ta De Lungt has spent VERY little time out of the car player or 5 disc-er since R. Bow hipped me to 'em.

I 'heart' Asheville - one of

I 'heart' Asheville - one of my favorite places; so beautiful.oh, Amy you'll appreciate this even though it is WAY OFF topic, Anna just interupted my post and asked me to break a cherio in half fo her, as I did I asked her why, to which she said "so the 'hands' can share"  -Welcome Home!

they WERE skinny!

…and truly bad ass! We STILL have to pick up the big double, although I did score their first album (combined with unreleased stuff) on used disc @ Harvest.  They were AMAZING.  Seriously!  The guitarist that looks vaguely like a younger, Swedish James "JY" Young was a mofo, all while being very unassuming (OH how we wished Dadmin was there to appreciate it!).  The bassist seems to be their primary translator. "Oh, hello!  Thank you for comink!  How many OF you were here for lahst time?  Do we sound a same?  I am taking your picture now, if is okay!" Gustav is too busy running around from guitar to organ to flute (?!  I never thought I would like a rock band with a flute-toter!) and dancing about like a revved up Robt. Plant to do much talking other than "SANK!"  in response to applause.  "Sank Ew!"  Yes.,  If you ever have a chance to see them, I reccomend.  yes.  "We are thinking Asheville is perhaps number one for us!"

I almost went to that show…. that would have been weird to see you there.  I live 2 hours from Asheville and it is indeed a great place.  We have friends with a place on Caeser's Head and we spend time up there whenever we can, often times hitting Brevard and Asheville.

That show was at the Orange Peel, no?  I love that venue.

Did Be Your Own Pet play as well.  I thought they were part of the Sonic Youth tour.

DUNGEN was at the Grey Eagle

SONIC YOUF was at the Orange Peel…what a sweet venue, eh?  Yeah, Be Your Own Pet opened.  Dang, those are some hyper kids!  Pretty entertaining! Mooons, I didn't know you were so close by!  it would have been hilarious to run into you there!  Leppo Bredder!

Rumors

I heard a rumor that my wife and I are seriously considering a move to Asheville in August of 2007. Apparently, some folks seem to think we would leave SF for Asheville because it' super beautiful 'n' hip (up there with NorCal), and my wife's mom is offering us for only $600/month a three-bedroom, turn-of-the-century home that 's not only situated on 1 acre+ of land but that sports a backyard deck and a screened-in front porch (the latter is something I supposedly love). This, people have said, would allow me to quit my day job once and for all and write full time. Others have also cited the fact that my wife and I are visiting Asheville this fall as confirmation of this persistent rumor.

dude, please

You're going to be there when the leaves are changing?  You're not even gonna want to go back to SF and pick up yer stuff.  You're gonna be so sold.

I know you will enjoy Asheville.  I will warn you though, it is no SF.  While it is much cheaper, Asheville gets a little limited (it is a pretty small town).  Also, there are not many jobs there.

That said, I live pretty close to Asheville and can give you some hints on restuarants/ bars in Asheville.  I know some people that have moved from there down to Columbia, SC (for either school or work).  Let me know.

Hell in the fall, just get on the Parkway, find a spot to pull over and start walking.  It is great.  If you like the outdoors Asheville is tough to beat.  There are at least 3 very good brew pubs in Asheville and great bars.

Great Info

Thanks for the great info, you jammers.

My wife and I have been feeling the pull of smaller town life (I think this is the trend nowadays). The fact that I'm now brining in money that's not tied to geography is a key factor in digging the Asheville option. And the thought of hanging out on a screened-in porch in such a gorgeous part of the country sounds too, too amazing.

Are there vegan restaurants? (This is a typical SF-type question!)

m0nz's picture

Vegan

Yup

Asheville is one of the few towns in the Southeast that have multiple vegan restuarants.  Some are very good too.  There is a whole hippie/granola vibe in Asheville that seems untouched by the 90s (unwashed?), that influences the number of vegan restaurants in my humble opinion.  Again, Asheville is small, so the options are limited in scope.

The best part of Asheville is the high yesterday was 75 while here, down the mountain, it was 93.

You should visit without a doubt.

Sounds great

Monsma, that sounds great. The weather sounds perfect. I don't like extremes in either direction.

Say, what are the newspapers there?

m0nz's picture

Papers

The newspaper is the Citizen Times: http://www.citizen-times.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage

The weekly is the Mountain Express: http://www.mountainx.com/ where the headline this week is "Can You Afford to Live Here?" and they go on to blame those out-of-towners for the housing prices.

Restaurants - The Noodle Shop on the corner is very good Chinese.  It is on Pack Square.  I also really like Jack of the Wood for drinking and bar food. Good times, very Irish bar.
