By the way, my grandma (my mom's mom, who is now 90 and still in possession of at least her mental faculties) migrated to Michigan as a teenager from Kentucky in the mid-1930s to work in the onion fields in Stockbridge (up between Jackson and Lansing).  Her sister met a farmer and got married.  My grandma married a Stockbridge local farmer type (who may or may not be a Mayflower descendent but that is a different story).   My grandma went to about the 6th grade in school, and in addition to being part of the rural migration also worked in a factory in Jackson for most of her adult life, this due in part to my grandpa's mental health and alcohol issues which kept him moving some employment-wise.  My grandpa ultimately committed suicide in 1968 when I was nine.

My dad's family also was totally rural and working class.  His father worked in the horn factory at Sparton Radio and in the early days they rode the Interurban into Jackson and they didn't get electricity until the late '30s through the REA. 

My father himself worked for 38 years at Consumers Power in the Gas Department and was certainly intelligent enough to have gone to college had that even been thought of for people in his social strata.

I probably should have subsituted the word 'know-nothing' for 'hillbilly' and I certainly mean no disrespect to most members of the white working class.  They are my people..

Anyway, this dude we know in Detroit is doing voiceover work for some documentary about a deaf woman or something, part of which was shot in Kalamazoo (?!) and the director informed him that "Kalamazoo is full of godfearing hillbillies and HIPPIES."

They must not have explored the town too much if they missed all the outpatients......

Maybe Hillary Clinton can make a comeback by discussing her and Bill's harrowing story of overcoming their Arkansian hillybilly fate of bare feet, bad teeth, fetal alcohol syndrome and Jackass-esque family shenanigans and successfully getting (probably from tireless moon-shinin and catfish noodlin) into the world of health, wealth and privilege.
