serious home repair advice needed

Water's been seeping into our bedroom wall when it rains. Yesterday, when the rain was at its heaviest, the water started making its way down the living room wall under the bedroom wall leak... in fact, it was dripping into the basement. Obviously, this needs to be stopped ASAP.

I'm stumped about what kind of contractor to call. Our family roofer had tried patching when this first developed but must not have located the true source of the leak. Not sure about whether to call another roofer, or mason, or who. I'm way out of my realm of knowledge when it comes to home structure issues, so don't want to call the wrong person and get taken. Any suggestions or recommendations? We want to get the leak stopped first... wall repair can happen later. Thanks!

Yikes!

First if you can, get thee to the attic with a flashlight and see if you can see where the water is coming in.  Sometimes a drip will occur in the flashing around a chimney or where the roof joins togther at a dormer.  It can leak in then travel down the inside slope of the roof and leak into the wall cavity.  If you can spot the source you might be able to get up on top of the roof with some roof tar and put a 'bandaid' patch of sorts on it.   Last time I tried to call someone to patch a roof, none of the roofers wanted to mess with a repair, they all wanted to put on a new roof.  Is it time for a new roof?  We had to do one 3 years ago, fortunately it was just a shingle-over, next time it will be a tear off and that will be big $$$.

You've probably still got a roof leak. The water is probably leaking in somewhere higher up/closer to the peak of the roof, and then running down slanted boards until it pools up near the outside walls. It can just run down the beams, or it could run on the boards under the shingles. Can you get into the attic? I'd go up there and look around.

Another thought, are your eves (gutters) plugged up?, I mean, even if they are the walls shouldn't be leaking, but if your eaves are not able to redirect roof run-off, well, it's gonna go somewhere.

Twin Peaks...

to calrify - this is happening right at the front peaks of the house.  We have a new roof, and I think we tried the attic, that particular area isn't visible from there.   It is right at the place where the slant of the peak hits the side of the house.  was aslo happening  on the other side of the house before the new roof...so frustrating.

I think Kapn is getting ahold of Herb, but just thought I should clarify, to narrow the search....and did he say a mason?  man...that is why I don't usually let him handle these things...hehehe...

Peetergeist--yes!

Further tangent alert: When I was about 10, I decided to take a squirt gun and hide in my little brother's closet until he fell asleep. And then I aimed the squirt gun at him three different times (hey, I was grounded from TV, whaddya want?): the first time, he got up and closed the window across the room. The second time, he looked up at the ceiling and not finding the leak, went back to sleep. The third time, he sat up and whispered, "ghosts!" and then ran screaming from the room. Mwah ha ha ha. I was grounded extra long after that... I have no good advice for Kapn except check your closets.

many thanks!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the advice, recommendations, and laughs.

Closets are checked every once in a while due to young fears of Kap'n Jr, no thanks to Mercer Mayer. So you think the story will help prevent scares?  How 'bout planting notions where there were none to begin with?  Curse you, children's lit authors.
