Dadmin and I happened upon this gem of a documentary on HBO last night. I just now discovered that it was the premiere broadcast, incidentally. I highly recommend watching this movie. There are some really jaw-dropping moments. Among other things. And before you think "The Kids from Widney High," or whatever, stop. The documenting of the making of the musical itself is a small, almost invisible at times, part of the story. The marriages, the parenting, everyone's lives as they've lived with autism throughout the years, the interviews with some astoundingly well-spoken autistic kids, not to mention seeing all these kids at all these ages who are so different from one another exhibit behaviors I have seen in H all of his life. (The old videotape of a three year old dancing/rocking back and forth on her feet in front of the stereo and not responding to her name being called 12 times ... THAT was weird.) Enough said. Watch it!

I saw the last 30 minutes
I saw the last 30 minutes because the crappor had it on, pretty corny at the end but seemed cool. Strange thing was that I had just gotten home from work and then it was like I was working again. Lots of rocking, lots of really smart and talented parents. Too smart? Steven Stills looked rested and full. His kid was cute as hell.
watched it!
yeah, the actual MUSICAL is the let-down part. Write better music for these kids!
The back story is what's fascinating. Neil, the russain adopted son of the woman putting on the musical, broke my heart. Dammit.
And yes, watching Lexi rocking to the music and folding in on herself at age two or whatever was AWFULLY FAMILIAR, having known our little H-man since he was a diaper-bearer. Yep, Ang, I saw exactly what you meant about the familiar gestures/expressions. Even the way that the hands are held when in the throes of describing something that excites. Neurology is a strange strange thing.
