Thanks for nothing Ralph.  Oh,  I mean thanks for 8 years of GWB.   I highly doubt he can poll over 0.5% these days but I'm sure there will still be those who see him as an 'alternative'.   Does the RNC fund him?   It would be interesting to know if there is actual Republican money going to Nader.

Here is one that shares my sympathies:

Someone must invite Ross Perot back into the ring.  There is now a serious imbalance of conservative independant representation.

leave him alone

he's entered the race on legitimate grounds, you know? he is saying that none of the candidates are asking the questions he's asking. he's also saying that all of the current candidates are all too closely-tied to big business.

also, to blame him soley for 2 terms of GWB???

WTF?

Do you honestly believe that? I'm sorry, but that's fucked up. What that says to me is that you have no faith in the system whatsoever. And if that's true, why do you vote? Or don't you? If you have no faith in democracy, why even post about Nader? By blaming Nader, you're also exposing yourself as rather ignorant about how the system works... I don't mean to make this sound like a personal attack, but I've heard too many so-called "liberals" blame Nader supporters for somehow "causing" Gore to lose the 2000 election. But, what they mean to say is "I only support democracy when it works FOR ME!" And, isn't that a rather GOP/corporate/Bush way of thinkin'?

Bat Guano's picture

I support democracy...

And I'll call Nader a pointless jackass as well.

Has he done anything to make the Greens (or whatever the hell he says he is now) a legitimate party? Has he helped build the party, to get their candidates in congress, in state and local elections? Has he worked to build support for himself from Green voters? Ran in a Green primary as a means of selecting which Green is the best for the Greens; and which Green contender might have a chance in '08?

Has he done anything to build a serious third party?

Or has he just jumped in, as the R and D primaries get their front-runners, to say, Oh, hey, me too!

Woo-hoo! Look at me! Ralph Nader! Haven't done shit since my days as a consumer advocate except collect speaking fees. But I've run for President! And I'm doin' it again! So vote for me because Gore and Bush, Bush and Kerry, Obama and McCain, are all identical!

amen, brother!

Has he done anything to build a serious third party?

That's my biggest question about Nader, who I do believe has every right to run, but I have to wonder why he hibernates so (or seems to) when he's not running.  A few, very fervent Nader/Green Party supporters made good points about him and his cause to me when he was running in 2000, and I understood full well why they wouldn't vote for any Dems or Reps... and I understand why they won't vote for any now. Still, seems like, if you're going to put yourself out there as a viable third-party candidate, get out there during non-election time and make a big noise about what's going on and why you intend to change it all come election time.

BTW, I think Gore's biggest enemy in 2000 was himself.  He tried so hard to distance himself from Clinton post-impeachment that he failed to emphasize the major accomplishments of the administration of which he was part.  I guess Nixon had the same problem in 1960.

Yes, in total agreement that if Nadir is back then we must seek the cranky services of Ross Perot to suck a few votes from Red heads.  Can the Dems help fund Ross or at least tease the Lil Billionaire into running?

I directly blame both Ralph Nader and the 96, 837 voters in Florida who voted for him for Bush's 2000 'victory'.   Sorry it is as simple as that.  If even half of those people had voted for Gore he would have been president then and probably still in office now.  Imagine no 9/11, no Iraq war.   An America with at least a minimum of respect around the world.  Modest differences perhaps but differences none the less.

you can blame them, but keep that as your own personal opinion. it is not "simple as that". you -in no way imaginable- can know what those 96,837 voters would have done. Besides, all other evidence strongly points to voter fraud; which adds up -to me, at least- that Gore would have lost anyway.

Herb Tarlick wrote:

you honestly think that if Gore won there would have been no 9/11? (no Iraq war, sure...) I mean, I'll gladly admit that if Bush hadn't won, that 9/11 might not have happened. But, that is nothing more than conjecture. Surely you can admit to that?

Meanwhile, be mad at Nader! And even disagree with him. But blaming him for a bunch of "what ifs" is fucking juvenille. at least know your limits and know what truths you might not know.

Bat Guano's picture

But...

Aug. 6, 2001, Bush got the presidential daily briefing, "Bin Laden determined to strike in US". He ignored it. He ignored repeated warnings from the remnants of the Clinton FBI, CIA, terrorism dudes like Richard Clark, that something was about to go down. I've always thought that the "9/11 was an inside job" people were paranoid freaks, but I've always suspected that Bush thought, 'let's see what happens if they do attack...heh heh heh.'

But he could've just thought, screw those Clinton holdovers, I gots my own way of knowin'... And/or Bush was/is just plain incompetent.

It's pretty doubtfull that Gore would've ignored the warnings as well.

I know back then that Nader people claimed that Gore would be just as bad as Bush. You can say that it a lame what-if game of assumptions to think that Gore would've been better, but after nearly eight years we can make a pretty educated guess and say with some certainty that Gore wouldn't have been such a shitcockfuck. That at the end of a Gore administration we wouldn't feel as anally raped as we do now.

And of course Nader helped Bush win. But if Gore had done just a bit better in Florida, Nader wouldn't have mattered.

But it's what third party presidential candidates accomplish -- they skim the votes of left-leaners from the left-leaning Dem candidate (or right- from right-leaning Repub). (Sure, some of those voters wouldn't have voted anyway, we assume.) They don't have a chance at accomplishing anything more than that, unless they build support behind their party and unless they build a party that's more than a label slapped on the one jackass who turns up every four years.

Damn, we're all getting so heavy. Here's a video to lighten up the joint.

Herb Tarlick's picture

The reason that voter fraud

The reason that voter fraud could influence the election so much in Florida was that the election was so close (500-1000 vote margin depending on who did the counting).  If, as I said, half of the Nader voters had voted for Gore, the margin would have been around 50,000 for Gore and would have been way more difficult to jack.   A very similar thing occurred in Illinois in 1960, in which Kennedy carried the state by a handful of votes that were rigged up by Joe Kennedy and Sam Giancana.

Obviously this is all personal opinion and there is a touch of hyperbole and speculation to some of what I am saying, especially the 9/11 part.  However, I do think it is very safe to say that Ralph Nader and his supporters did as much or more to cost Gore the presidency in 2000 as any fraud.   The Naderites can say whatever they want about both parties being the same and all (and in a lot of ways they are) but when one thinks how preventable the aberration called George W. Bush was it is kind of ironic to think that the people who theoretically disliked him the most were the ones that elected him.

Fucking juvenile?  You hilarious.

u1oo's picture

As much as I'd love to blame

As much as I'd love to blame Bush on America's flaccid penis (aka Florida) ... Gore was unable to muster up a win in his home state of TN. Ouch!

Nader was nowhere to be found while Kerry was getting the beat 4 years later. Ouch OUCH!

I'll probably be impressed if whoever eventually gets seated this time around can avoid a replay of USA circa 1929.

Name calling is so convincing!

As is sarcasm, I'm aware.

Of course, what you're attacking is a just a symptom of the REAL problem - that the electoral college is an unwieldy, antiquated system that gives tiny, useless states too much weight and makes the voters feel powerless and annoyed. Third parties (let alone fourth and fifth...) need a one citizen / one vote scenario to be effective in any way except as spoilers.

Dude all I said is you are hilarious.  Baiting me on my age will get you nowhere, trust me I've heard it all.    I have however had the unique pleasure of my 20 year old daughter saying 'hey dad, you need to catch me up on what's going on with music' which I don't think is something the average 48 year old person hears on a regular basis.

You know the more I watch this thing I think Obama is gonna emerge the victor, at least on the Democrat side, he's just so damn sexy.  Hillary seems more and more like a stubborn turd that just wont flush, circling, floating, circiling... maybe next time her shrill-assed voice will be waterlogged enough to go down.  Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against a woman president, I just wish our Govoner was running instead of Hilliary, she has a soothing voice when she's blowing sunshine.  Oh and Nader can suck it, sure he's got the right to run, but I'm not impressed.  And for that matter, the more I hear Ron Paul speak, the more he seems like a less-government-fuck-social-programs-conservative-wackjob asshole.  The best thing he has going for him is his grass roots posse.  At least the republicans who smoke pot will have someone to vote for.
