OscAAr nominee announcements

The nominees for the 80th annual AA’s have been announced - frankly, I think Superbad got screwed.

For those of you who don’t dig hyperlinks - Best Pic nominees are:

Atonement

Juno

Michael Clayton

No Country For Old Men

There Will Be Blood

Atonement

I was floored by Atonement. The story’s intense and worked for me, tho others might call it trite, and a couple of the scenes go too long (“We spent a bundle of $$ on this war set and by God I want to see all of it” said Mr. Producer), but it is BEAUTIFULLY photographed - every frame’s a work of art. The surrealistic quality of the war scenes reminded me of Apocalypse Now. Go see it, y’all - at the Rave w/it’s digital projectors!

first Atonement testimonial!

Of all the best pic nominees - of which I’ve seen none! - that’s the one I was least likely to see, only because I’ve heard greater things about the book… but, like I’ll ever read fiction!

CG and I caught Sweeney Todd last night - visuals are amazing - and while Depp is suitably demented (slow-burn style), with a singing voice that reminds me of Bowie circa Man Who Sold The World, I don’t think he’s gonna walk away with the Best Actor trophy.

Johnny!

But, wait: Isn’t "Sweeney Todd" in the Musicals category, not the, uhhh, regular movie categry? Which means Col. Depp would have a much better chance at winning. And does anyone know if this is the last week for "Sweeney Todd" in Kzoo? I gotta go see it, even if I go by myself. I really want to see this one on the big screen.

I am really out of touch because I have not heard of one of those films.

I wish "There Will Be Blood" would hurry up and come here.  I can’t wait to see that.  Ohhhh, PT Anderson.

I really really enjoyed "Juno" and would love to see it get some attention.  "No Country for Old Men," though, holy CATS!  That movie FLOORED me.

I just cannot work up any enthusiasm for going to see "atonement."  I don’t know why!  Something about the ads aggravate me.

I’m holding out hope for a visit by "I’m Not Here"—but not holding my breath.

I kind of liked "Juno". A little contrived. Juno was actually my least favorite character in the movie. The precious little soundtrack got on my nerves about half way thru.

Maybe I didn’t like it.

dear Mrs. Depp

Today’s the last day for Sweeney in any K’zoo theatres.  More than likely it will show up at the Cheap Flicks in Battle Creek in the next few weeks.

If it’s any consolation, looks like No Country For Old Men is reappearing locally, and The Savages is showing up too.

AA doesn’t have separate categories for comedies/musicals vs. dramas - which is why those "lighter" films usually get short shrift at nomination time, never mind when winners are selected.  Think the Marx Brothers ever got a nomination?  (S. J. Perelman won, I think, for the Night At The Opera screenplay, otherwise, nothin’!)

At any rate - I have a feeling Daniel Day-Lewis will be wiping the floor with the other Best Actor nominees come ceremony time.

I was just at the Celebration site and yes both No Country and The Savages will be here for another week and I really hope to be able to see them both.

Juno...eh...

I agree w/Mr. Jass re: Juno. I liked her, but she and most of the other characters were so glib w/so many hip references and come backs at the tip of their tongues that they made me feel stupid while I was enjoying what they were saying. Whoops - my insecurities are showing…

I agree with Kapn

Superbad got screwed….. MCLOVIN

who are we kidding, the academy would never acknowledge that kind of film.  The funny ones that is.

Columbia SC is looking better since all of those films have played here and I have seen none of them.  A buddy of mine says There Will Be Blood was the best of the lot, and he has a keen cinema eye.

I can’t believe that an Ethan Bros. movie has been out for 2 months and I haven’t taken my lame as$ to see it.  Can I blame kids for that?

can you blame kids for that?

Um… maybe.  CG and I managed to get out to a total of 4 movies all year - they were:

Ratatouille (with Kap’n Jr.)

The Simpsons Movie

Superbad

Sweeney Todd (I’m counting it as an ‘07 viewing)

Oh my god - we’re so high school!  And we really did see those films in alphabetical order.

Finally went to the mooovies

I saw No Country for Old Men on Saturday.  It was great, I highly recommend it.  The Coen Brothers + cormac mccarthy = one brutal film.

A kid in front of me gasped "THAT’S IT" at the ending, which made me chuckle.  I knew what to expect/ not expect from the ending.  I love movies that don’t give away too much, and give no real answers.

We've seen none of the

We’ve seen none of the nominees either.  We saw 1/2 the movies CG & KK saw though.  Cloverfield at the Rave caused fairgrounds style motion sickness.  I love the Rave, 3 minutes from our front door and all digital and nice.  K-10 is the Eastowne 5 (right before they went $.99 movies) of the area.

I heard on the radio today that writers in Hollywood are going to break their strike to write witty zingers for the Academy Awards, then go back to not working.  Great strike.

Superbad was pretty fun.  Why all comedies gotta have KS style verbose turds plopping out all the time.
