Bye-Bye Kitty

Remember me bitching about my “ass licking cat?” I regret every word.

 
Sure, there were times when I’d get pissed at her. Frankly, when Treela brought her home, I wasn’t really over the loss of Bob, the kitty by which all other kitties will forever be judged. I suspect that played into it a bit. You know what else played into it? Me, just trying to be funny.

 
But now I’m sad, because we lost Piper Saturday. And instead of dwelling on the glasses of water made yucky by her ass-licking tongue, I’m instead remembering how cool it was to hear her walk up and down the piano keys, playing spooky cat music in the dead of the night. Cooler still was that she actually played fetch with super balls! Piper would chase them as they ricocheted around the room, ultimately cornering, and then returning them to the pitcher so that it could be thrown again. That was something I’ll really miss. Sure, she shed a lot, and did that classic “cat face bump” thing at inopportune times, but it was a small price to pay for the joy she brought to our family, myself included. Treela will especially miss the shoulder massages Piper often gave while sitting behind her on the couch.

 
Everyone agreed that Piper was Beth’s cat. They loved each other most of all, which makes Piper’s method of exit absolutely tragic.

 
Beth recently got a dog, it came to visit, and it killed our cat.

 
The dog is a beautiful Siberian Husky named Thor. He’s 3 years old and is actually very sweet. He’s been kept as an inside dog, is not the least bit aggressive towards people, and I’ve never even heard him bark.  He was on the porch with Harley (our Basset Hound) when Piper jumped in through the cat door. She saw Thor, turned and ran. Thor hit the door, which unfortunately wasn’t latched, and 3 seconds later he’d broken Piper’s neck. It was very quick and Piper didn’t suffer, (but I wouldn’t go so far as to say that she “never felt a thing.”)

 
At first, I was pretty sure that the dog needed to die, but it’s really not his fault, and were cool now, Thor ‘n me. Would I have been surprised or angry if he’d killed a rabbit? No. I’d have expected it. And since he’d never been introduced to Piper, she might just as well have been a rabbit to him. I’m not afraid of him, and I’m not afraid for my grandkids to be around him, (but I sure wouldn’t dress the littlest one in fur and dangle him in front a Siberian Husky!)

 
RIP Piper, you will be missed.
