Once again I’ve tried and failed to resurect my Alesis A-dat and so I’m looking for a low-cost solution to multi-track recording.  I really miss my adat, it was so incredibly better than the fostex 4-track cassette from days of yore.  So what are you good people using?  What do you like or dislike?

I’ve been using the Zoom H2

I’ve been using the Zoom H2 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Zoom+-+H2+Handy+Recorder/8890293.p?skuId=8890293&id=1218008397808 to record my first track (Usually guitar only, or guitar and a vocal) and then I transfer the track onto my PC.    I use the free multi tracking/mixing program, Audacity. It’s not as fancy as some of the programs, like Protools or Cakewalk, but it’s really easy to use, and it has all the effects I’ll ever need.     Once I have a basic track, I can use the Zoom as a USB microphone to keep adding tracks, or I can I transfer the first track to my IPod. With the first track on my IPod, I can listen to that and record separate/additional tracks directly onto the Zoom. That way I don’t have to be near the PC to record, and I know that it will match up with the original track when I load it into Audacity.   The Zoom H4 has multi track capabilities, but I’ve heard they are difficult to work with. Again, Audacity is super easy.   (There are a lot WIKI tips available for Audacity’s effects settings. I use this one a lot: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=GVerb )   The H2 is cheaper than the H4. It has a ¼” instrument input jack, high quality built-in microphones, a metronome, and a guitar tuner. It’s perfect for my needs.

Tree,   Cool  I’ve been thinking about Audacity as I only need a scratch pad.  The last time I tried to record directly on the computer I ended up messing something up, but that was on my old Athelon.  I’ve not messed with the new family machine, but it’s often being used by other people in my house.  Also,  Ethical Paul mentioned the H2 & H4  but it’s nice to hear about someone actually using one and liking it.  I like the look—and the price—of the H2 and was hoping that someone I knew was using it.  I like the way the mics are internal instead of on swivels for me to break.  My goal this week is to set up an old pc and see if I can get Audacity to run on my ancient machine.  I’m still open to suggestions from anyone.
