how to pay for health care reform

Nice article by Chalmers Johnson on dismantling our far-flung military empire…. “Think of this as the American health care reform program that no one is discussing.”

If only we could have a rational discussion on reducing defense spending without all the “why do you hate the troops” jingoistic banter.

What?

So spending a trillion dollars on invading a country that was not a threat to us or our allies and didn’t even lower the cost of gas was a WORSE investment than some planned socialized medicine scheme to put a bureaucrat between me and my doctor?

Is that what you’re saying? I didn’t read the article, so I’m not sure…

Yes.

A trillion dollars and I’m still paying $2.50 for gas.

Actually, we’re now up to three countries, plus special ops fucking around in about a half dozen of their neighbors.

Like those 3  US “hikers” in the Kurdish region of Iraq who just happened to wander into Iran the other day. They can claim no CIA connection and that’s why they have a perfect cover story for ‘em….we’re just peace and conflict studies majors from Berkeley; we hate what’s happening here and want to help.

What a story!

Totally. This tops most of the “hey, I’m just a tourist accidentally wandering into a enemy territory” stories.

…they’re just backpacking students!  Strangely old-ish looking, backpacking STUDENTS with a peculiar flair for poor travel destinations!  They’re, like, the freelance peace corp or somethin’ somethin’!

Not to get off the subject, but - damn, QN, is that Doug Sahm? I just picked up a cutout of Groover’s Paradise on a whim, and don’t regret it a bit. That hippie-ass cover almost killed the deal.

Privatizing Good, Government Bad

Damn! I hadn’t seen the Blackwater update! Gotta love murder and smuggling for profit (with taxpayer money at that!). Tony Soprano would be proud. Didn’t Holland, MI give Erick Prince a key to the city or something? After all, he’s one of their favorite sons.

It’s time, my friend, to relinquish your hippie hate. Groover’s Paradise rocks!

But yeah, I read this yesterday. Really intense. Of course, the government — with help from the mainstream press, of course — is going to turn Blackwater into the “one bad apple,” when in fact this whole contractor system is just evil.
