It’s been 24 years since guitarist Ron C., drummer Scott S., and bassist Karl K. made their first appearance as the Sinatras in front of an enthusiastic in-store crowd at Battle Creek’s Rock Cafe. The band has never called it quits, though their appearances have been quite rare in recent years (an intense on-air live performance on WMU’s WIDR 89.1 FM in March being the only exception so far in 2009). Fans hope to hear more from them in the immediate future, especially as the spectre of their next, 25th, anniversary looms large.
All members remain the best of friends, so the band’s lack of activity can’t be attributed to personal reasons - it’s due, more likely, to their legendary procrastination. The band is rumored to be readying a 25th anniversary collection, but a similar set was promised for a 20th anniversary that came and went without a single new note of release, despite a studio session in the fall of 2003, with none other than Freddy Fortune and Michael Maltese overseeing engineering and production, that resulted in a number of unreleased takes seeing completion.
Band members are continually humbled to find well-wishers asking about their plans to this day. The band has none, but the fact that they, and others, expect some to be made eventually, drives home the directive of the last song of the vinyl LP thrown on the Rock Cafe’s turntable immediately after the band’s debut performance: “Plans I Make”, from Husker Du’s New Day Rising:
Gotta make plans for the plans I makeGotta make friends for the friends I makeGotta make plans for the friends I makeGotta make friends for the plans I makeGo make plans!
Ron, Scott - I love you guys, you guys are good!
