Starting this one again so it won’t be on page 10.
Found in an undisclosed location in southwest Michigan today.
A VG+/NM copy of ‘We’re Only In It For The Money’ by the Mothers. Just about the last original Mothers record I didn’t own. Wow it really covers the bases.
A VG or so MONO copy of Jefferson Airplane ‘Takes Off’. Signe Anderson on vocals. The original ‘Get Together’. Some nice early SF sounds, wondering what Quantum has to say about this one…..

nice scores!
Check your copy of JFTO, Herb. If it’s got “Runnin’ Round This World” (has to play it, not just list it) at the end of side 1, it’s worth 2-3 grand. If it doesn’t, but still has “Let Me In” and “Run Around” with pre-censored lyrics, it’s worth a mere grand or so. If none of the above - groovy spin, totally dated like a We Five LP.
I got Sweet’s Give Us A Wink at disclosed Milham Goodwill location this weekend. Never heard it before. Where was I? I felt like I was 14 listening and air-banding to it this weekend - and felt like I was 9 while having fun with the “winking” die-cut sleeve.
say....
Don’t I remember some stories about Nate’s mom being San Fran roomies with the first JA singer? Was that Signe? I am curious. Hrmph!
My best score of late was provided by Mr. Timh, who brought me a copy of a newly reissued Irma Thomas record on Mississippi Records. It is really kicking my ass. It sneaks up on you. First listen, it’s like "yeah, this is pretty good. Yeah! All right!" Second listen, TOTALLY KILT ME. Ooooh, it’s good. Very odd and cool arrangements and production.
Sadly, Mississippi REcords are kinda hard to find online. It’s not the british record store, it’s an american label that seems devoted primarily to reissues and scorns online availability. Everything I’ve gotten so far on the label is AMAZING. They do really limited runs, so if’n yer innarested in Irma, better holler at Tim boy QUICK LIKE A BUNNY!
speaking of
speaking of censoring…isn’t that Mothers got censored "don’t come in me" parts? Sadly, I only have the CD; which restores the censored (as well as annoyingly adds new instrumentation! fucking zappa! he’s the george lucas of rock.)
I love undisclosed places in michigan! I’ve found plenny of good stuff at yard sales there! mint copies of Freak Out! (speaking of zappa), Troutmask Replica, Evening With Wildman Fisher, Power of Zeus, etc etc. All for like 50 cents or a few dollars! Sigh, gone are the days…
why pay more?
also, has anyone here paid 2 or 3 grand for a rekkid? wtf? I know some are worth a few hundred, but more than a grand? doesn’t that kind of add up to make the buyer a rather sad chump, and the seller a lucky bastard? what’s your limit in buying vinyl? are you buying for the pleasure of hearing it, or for the collectibility? I can’t imagine that vinyl is a solid "investment" these days, you know?
Also on the first Jefferson
Also on the first Jefferson Airplane LP, its Skip Spence on drums.
I am not the worlds biggest fan of the late 60’s S.F. music scene, but the first two Jefferson Airplane LP’s are good!!!!
I did my research. It
I did my research. It ain’t the censored one. Oh well. I went back today and got a copy of Mirror Man on Buddah alas with no jacket (it had radio station call letters on it) but it was only a buck and it’s in really good shape.
I'd grab a sleeveless record in good shape
That one in particular! You can always find a beat to hell vinyl copy in a nice sleeve and do a switch-out. (Do all the Beefheart-heads here know about the Sundazed vinyl-only issue of what was supposed to be the follow-up LP to Safe as Milk, It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper? I’ve read that Mirror Man was a label-imposed truncation/cobble.)
I buy records only because I want to listen to them, but I’ve learned enough about certain collectible pieces that I check ‘em out thoroughly if I’m flipping through record bins, even if I own them or don’t care much for them (actually, very few super-collectibles wouldn’t make my list of must-own LPs in any variation, though JATO doesn’t cross my speakers often). I wouldn’t pay a crazy amount of money for any LP - most I’ve spent for a double is about $30, which was my recent purchase of a sealed Amazing Journey Who doc soundtrack LP, limited to a pressing of 3000. I cracked it open and have really enjoyed listening to it! Hell, I hung on to my Negativland U2 12” in sealed condition for about 7 years, then had to crack it open and play it just to have a laugh again at Casey Kasem swearing it up! My stuff gets played.
If I had a substantial amount of disposable income, I might buy a butcher cover if it were just under a grand, but I keep thinking I’ll find one at a garage sale.
I’d also buy up shitloads of 45 picture sleeves for records already in my collection.
I buy records because my
I buy records because my mother didn’t breast feed me.
we got about 40 new singles and about a dozen LP’s over the past weekend in Memphis and GR.
most notable was a Uri Gellar LP with him reading poetry over some sick orchestral shit. no, crappor found me a mostly moog record that I hadn’t seen before. Can’t wait to bussit.
the new Eddy Current Suppression Ring on Goner and the first one from 2006 on Dropkick are the swellest LP’s I’ve scored over the past few years. They’re not written about in Pitchfork yet but they’re up for the Aussie version of a Grammy this year. Fuck’s sake! They kinda remind me of the Menthols in a good way.

there is no other acceptable answer!
oh wait!
I forgot about other recent scores!
Laurie Anderson America Live box set for $10 at Sunset Junque. I haven’t listened to it yet to see if it’s painfully dated or not.
STREET BEATS—a double-album Sugar Hill collection from the Antique Mall in Saugatuck. Cheap! Pretty decent shape! NEW YORK NEW YORK! There’s some great stuff and some amazing cheese. Rang dang diggity dang de dong (SNIIFFFFFF!) White Liiiiiines…..
Jefferson Airplane Takes Off
Herb, that’s a damn good record. It’s not as good as the next three: Surrealistic Pillow, After Bathing at Baxter’s (the band’s peak) and Crown of Creation. But still, it’s top shelf. What I find interesting about …Takes Off is how it documents acid rock’s initial incarnation. When folkies in SF and down on the peninsula first started experimenting with LSD, they didn’t go for the distortion right off the bat. Instead, they took the jangle of the Byrds, Beau Brummels and Beatles and transformed it into this massive reverberating pulse — incredibly visceral and all encompassing (like an acid trip), but not soaked in feedback. (Add some Dylan and Motown in there for good measure.) There exist some early live recordings from the …Takes Off era, and they actually do a better job than the LP at capturing the original SF sound.
Speaking of Jefferson
Great Society
They had flashes of utter brilliance, though I don’t know what record you picked up. Autumn recorded the band, but never released an album. Sundazed finally released the demos, with its Born to be Burned compilation, which has its moments. But I prefer the live albums originally released in the 1960s. The Great Society had a hypnotic pulse and love for Eastern rhythms; they basically predated everything from the Doors to krautrock. Good stuff.

It was a live LP I picked up, havent had a chance to give it a spin, but when I do I will report back.

That’s the band’s best stuff. But it wasn’t recorded by Sly, only the studio tracks were. Does the record have "Sally Go Round the Roses"? That’s like Stereolab or something, way awesome.
LP madness!
Oh, that damned K-college radio sale! Holy CRAP they had goodies! I’m curious to hear what others scored. We were there early afternoon and went completely hog wild. What I remember:

to no surprise, I can’t stand john’s solo stuff at all, but yoko’s early stuff is cool. fly gets a lot of airplay when I’m at work…annoying everyone, to be sure!
Mr. Jass, how much did you pay for that John Hartford LP?
I’m jealous. I’ve been looking for a vinyl copy of Aereo-Plain for some time now. It’s usually on the pricey side.
OOF!
it was shockingly cheap, since everything was flat-priced. i believe it was $2 each / 3 for $5 / 20 for $15. No special pricing on ANYTHING!! WAAAAHOOOOOO!!! i didn’t even have the gumption to look through the 45’s. nothing was really organized by category or anything. Total randomness.
O Brudda
"Aereo Plain" is in decent shape. Plays and sounds nice. Of course it has "WJMD" scrawled across it in big letters affecting the value. I’ve never really sought out Hartford records before, but this one is good. Great playing, crisp production… and just enough nuttiness to raise the eyebrows. I remember years ago hearing Hartford at the home of a family friend–can’t recall the title, but I think it was the same era as AP–I was really intrigued by it. I think I was about 10. All I had heard up until then was straight up old school b-grass. I was thinking "this dude is nuts… but plays his ass off".
Aereo-Plain...
…is basically considered his masterpiece. I love it. It’s like a cross between bluegrass, the Holy Modal Rounders and a lot of weed.
That early New Grass Revival album you picked up is also pretty damn good.
Wiz’s bro told me he
Wiz’s bro told me he scored an Equals LP, fucking gosh I’m jealous of that score. And a bunch of other stuff. He said he fell down some lil stairs in the room when he found a Hawkwind LP and was all, stand up, fucking holy shit, and wobble. Drunk with deep digging.
They’re having the sale again this Saturday too.
Crazy that the stacks weren’t picked over by anybody before the sale started. Hawkwind, fuck’s sake.
no shizzle?
Same time, same place? I do have a few regrets that I left behind. And didn’t ever look through all the stuff stacked by walls. BALLS! He got an EQUALS LP? Dang! Boy musta got there before usn’s.
Soul! Soul! Soul Brother Clifford!

WJMD Record Sale
Hi everybody,
Congrats to hear about your good finds. WJMD, in fact, had culled through the collection before the sale, but we have only enough space to set aside 6-8 boxes of our vinyl collection to keep in the new station. Thus, the rest is for sale.
The time for Saturday’s sale is the same (10 AM - 2 PM), however it’s in a new location:
The Hicks Center (near Lovell St), Second floor (from the main entrance),
As soon as you walk in to the Hicks Center, look up and to the left: you’ll see the radio station.
(recommended parking is a lot off of Lovell St, or to park on Lovell, and then walk to
campus).
Prices may or may not stay the same as last week (they will not increase, though, I can promise that).
We don’t have the manpower to look up the individual value for each and every LP, so if you happen to find one that is worth a lot, it would be very appreciated if you would speak up and let us know (and we would let you still buy it at a very reasonable price).
We are a non-profit station that only has less than a $1000/year budget, so every dollar would help.
Hope to see you there on Saturday.

Scott got tons o’ singles. If the sale keeps going, go visit! It’s not totally p[icked over, especially since everybody has their own pockets of stuff that they’re totally into that the vast majority of folks who casually stroll through aren’t gonna pick up! Go man, go! You’ll find goodies!
jorge!
Nice diggin Dignan! It’s a
Nice diggin Dignan! It’s a damn shame how overlooked Sam Rivers is. What gives? Everything I pick up by him is solid and everyone who I recommend him to really dig him. 2 Marion Brown records! I really dig those Oaxacan and Chiapas Nonesuch records. The festival noise bleeding in throughout the recordings is pretty great.
Have you checked out the "Jorge y Gil" collaboration with Jorge Ben and Gilberto Gil? That’s a tasty listen. I think the KPL has a copy.
yarrs!
I still haven’t listened to my Nonesuch scores, but they’re always so damned reliable. I did pass on some Irish Nonesuch stuff just because I got burned out on that by having some fruity folky pals in collidge that were way too into the Bothy Band and such. Yrg.
Still haven’t listened to the Sam Rivers, but the Marion Brown "Sweet Earth Flying" got played yesterday and that was really beautiful. Backed up by AACM dudes—Muhal Richard Abrams and Steve McCall and Paul Bley and????I’m blanking out. Sometimes I forget that those guys can just be really super pretty as well as forehead-pinchers.
I burned that Gilberto y Ben CD from the library and still haven’t fully absorbed it because I’m such a whore for iPod shuffle….
TimH, I don’t know if you’ve heard much Air stuff, but you might dig them, too. Mebbe i should burn you sumfin.
DIGNAN. Ha! Ca-CAW! CaCAW!
Your name IS Dignan, man.
I always wondered about Sam Rivers. Never heard anything, but he reads like he would be kind of an Ayler contemporary, no? If so, I needs to find me some.
What I’ve heard of Air, I dig. Henry Threadgill is swell.
I'm there next week!
Just astounding return scores, Dingey. I really wanna hear the Blunstone and the Rhodes (American Dream was started as a Merry-Go-Round record, I think). The Detroit Emeralds! First Game Theory (EP?)! All kindsa Sparks! Luck-EE.
Liberry still circs the Jorge y Gil… also has a nice box set of Sam Rivers, alongside a few single disc titles of his.
deetroit
The Emeralds are not as mind-blowing as their Westbound labelmates, but they’re aaaaaiiight. I really like what I’ve heard of the Emmit Rhodes. What info i could find online about the album was contrary. Different stories. American Breed? His first solo album, which the label refused? (Then why is it in my hand?) Still haven’t listened to "Ennismore, " but blunstone’s "One Year" will make the Kap’n cry. It’s gorgeous ORCH POP for ya!
I picked up a Muhal Richard
I picked up a Muhal Richard Abrams and Malachi Flavors LP that is really nice. I’ve got some more recent finds to add to this list soon.
Huge, Sam Rivers makes very satisfying music. He gets freaky, yet maintains a lot of swing.
I’ve only breathed air, heard the French band named air and read about the freaky deaky Air. I would like to hear some.
Rightcha
I’ll burn you whichever AIR album they deconstruct standards on. Like I just deconstructed my grammar. Again, wild but swangin’ and posessed of the funkybutt.
Since Westbound was
Since Westbound was mentioned, a Detroit group to really check out is The Fantastic Four. Those brothers could get down.
Tim-Bo-Tay
You were totally right about the oaxaca/chiapas record.
