The other day I ran into Red, and we were discussing Roxy Music.  The only thing I got from them is Country Life, so I have been spinning that, and you know what, its better than I remember it, especially side one.   I know "Do The Strand" and "Love Is The Drug".   What else they got that moves, with or without Eno.

post eno a joke?….i beg to differ….eno was good at adding color and a sense of "otherness" to roxy…..but bryan ferry is the true genius….ive found as i age and mature the entire roxy catalogue is to my liking…..the first two bryan ferry solo records are good…but not essential…..these days i find myself listening to avalon more and more….oh yeah….dont get me wrong….eno is a genius…..but still…..roxy without eno a joke?….far from it..

A great book on Roxy Music.  I read it this past summer.  His interpretation (which is pretty sound from listening to the albums) would be that the Eno stuff is more daring and after Eno left the band they became more focused on hits and breaking into the US market in a big way.   For Your Pleasure is probably their peak, but there are good cuts on all of the Roxy albums and Ferry’s solo work (again, especially the earlier albums) can be quite good as well.  I would highly recommend the book.  I found it in a remainder store in Fla. for like 4 bucks.

Roxy, Eno, Bowie.  Some of the best stuff of the ’70s.

Is Rare Earth REALLY that good?

Dangitt Sam, guess I’m gonna hafta give a serious listen.

I’ll report back with my findings.

(I’m sure you’ll all want to know what I think.)

Rare Earth is neither

My dad’s racin’ buddy had Get Ready on 8-track - best way to get through 18 minutes of title track is with fade, kerchunk, fade-in in the middle. Get out while you can!

Speaking of 8-tracks, my first Roxy LP was a remaindered 8-track of Siren. A couple of years after that I heard Viva! Roxy Music - on 8-track - in Dusty’s car on a trip to GR. A couple of years after that I fell under the spell of Avalon. I haven’t had a serious listen to any of the others! But For Your Pleasure is on hold for me at the liberry - some long years after JC got Goldstar working on “Editions of You”, an amazing band workout if ever I heard one.

When I give them my full attention, I think I’ll be as impressed by early Roxy LPs as I was with early Sparks LPs - but I won’t have any nostalgia for them like I have for “Dance Away”.
