Got the message below this morning via one of the world’s most notorious gossips.    I didn’t know KendrXck really well but I do recall hanging out with him at Bell’s sometime around the holidays last year and occasionally running into him at the Old Hat or some other country type establishments. 

KendrXck ChXpman was found dead at the farm  in Cass County on Kessington Road.

Kendrix was one of the first people I met when I was just a babe in the beery woods, at "keggers" and such, along with Chris Simouske and Squirrel. I began running into him again recently, very occasionally  — as in, he took a chair at our table once out of the blue at a bar downtown and had some of our pitcher of Ol’ Style — and he seemed, um, affected. Like something had permanently affected his thought process. It was not happy. And this mysterious death does not sound good, as opposed to the fun kind of young death. Wasn’t good friends with him or anything, but jeez, talked to him at almost every party I went to for 8 or 10 years. Was always a nice guy to me.

It seems as I get older the list gets longer.  I was informed through the normal communication channels.  Otherwise I would have found out next week probably.  Being a workaholic out in the boondocks.  AFAIK the viewing is Friday evening and the funeral is Saturday morning in Cassopolis.

Her words: they said in the news that they have new leads today .. i’m gonna go see my family and the arrangements have been made . i’d like anyone who knew him tto please write down any memories they have and share them with me i’d like to compile them . my buddy john just called and told me about the circumstance and fuck…   i hadnt seen Kendrick in about ten years, nor Ursula (who i secreted a crush on forever) but fuck…  this has got me all choked up.  i hope the cops figure it out.  i wish i had seen him lately but i lost touch with him.  fuck…

This is sad.  I don’t know who this is, but I know if I see a picture I’ll know because there are so many people who touch your life in ways that aren’t obvious.  I can’t count the times I hung out with people at things around town, just joking around and shooting the shit.  Sad.

I don’t think I knew Kendrick, but I’m pretty sure there was only one Ursula in town and I used to run into her at shows alla the time.  Always liked that girl.  Really sad business.

I think I met him in the same pub as Ang. He did seem extremely surreal, in an odd sort of way. Who knows? Obviously troubled and if it’s the guy I met, he was also extemely sensitive. We count every moment as precious.

Tribune Staff Writer

The suspicious death of a Calvin Township man earlier this week has launched the first homicide investigation of the year in Cass County.

An autopsy has determined that Kendrick Lemar Chapman, 34, died of a gunshot wound sometime before 8:30 a.m. Monday when a delivery driver discovered his body in a pole barn in the 66000 block of Kessington Road, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The gunshot wound was not initially apparent, Cass County Sheriff’s Capt. Lyndon Parrish said, and the body was taken to Lansing for an autopsy. He declined to release more information at this time.

Chapman was involved in an altercation in Cass County more than a year ago, Parrish said, but an aggravated assault charge against the other individual was apparently not pursued at the time because of lack of evidence. When asked whether the incident might be connected to his death, Parrish said, “Right now we’re looking at everything.”

Harold Nelson, who spent three years teaching Chapman the art of blacksmithing, described his colleague and friend as a good man and a talented artist who did both ornamental and architectural artwork.

“He had the stamina and the strength” for blacksmithing, said Nelson, who operates Armageddon Forge in Cassopolis. “He was a very powerful man, physically.”

Nelson said Chapman, who he believed used the pole barn for his studio, had the ability to succeed in his field.

“He was well on his way, had he been allowed to mature and continue,” he said.

“This is a loss, this is a cultural loss.”

I just heard about Kendrick and this makes me so sad.  I went to school with him since kindergarten but lost touch.  He was the sweetest, best guy and just so kind-hearted.  I can’t believe someone would take his life this way.
