This past weekend  I went to see the Ponys in Bloomington IL with some newly made friends. The Ponys were of casual interest so I mainly went to hang out. I had always liked what I heard by them and caught them 1 1/2 years ago at Kraftbrau and liked their set ok. I liked their songs that had the fruity Tom Verlaine/Richard Hell vocals. I never picked up their records though.

This guy Nick who I went to this show with grew up with those guys in the Ponys and told me that the fruity singer/guitarist was no longer in the band. When they hit the stage I wasn't so sure about them because of a petty reason - they were sporting mid 60s Bill Wyman style haircuts. I thought they would suck actually do to their haircuts.

Boy was I wrong. They were kick ass. they played all new songs and a lot of the new songs had a Spacemen 3 "Amen" vibe. Some of their songs also reminded of Brian Jonestown Massacre songs but more realized. I was really impressed and laughed at myself for thinking that their haircuts would make them suck. I'm definitely getting their new album when it comes out.

Don't you love it when your expectations and presumptions are totally confounded?  I love it when that happens!

i didn't like the Ponys specifically because they sounded like Television before. Maybe I give them another chance. The guitarist/singer (the olde one I think) was in the Guilty Pleasures and they were good times rockin. That Jered dude also plays with Miss Alex White in The Hot Machines, also top shelf and notch.

Haircut and………attitude.

Yes, Gay Baby opened the show. They played a good first show. Their drummer was extremely sick but did well under the circumstances. They had a slight surf sound. I bet they'll be a lot of fun as they progress.

In the Ponys, the lead singer/guitarist that's still in the band was also in th Guilty Pleasures. He played drums in the Guilty Pleaures.

"Haircut and………attitude." Ain't that the damn truth. As I wrote above, it's really petty to judge a band by their haircut but if they have a stupid fashioned out haircut more often they've got a stupid fashioned out personality to go with it.
