I remember watching this at the time and just howling. Oh, Grand Rapids. Oh, Moz. One of my favorite Flipside customers was GEEEEEEEEKED about this appearance. Little Silver Matt? Anyone remember him? Died his hair silver? Worked for a while at Sark*zy's? He was absolutely bulletproof when we'd tease him about Morrisey. His faith was strong.
"He says what needs to be said. It's poetic."
Yes. if only he could write a melody to go with that poetry..

This may be another video in which our Chimp makes an appearance. I’m certainly hoping so. I will be scouring the sub-par digital replication for Tim in Morrissey drag. If found I will post stills after I pick myself up off of the floor, change my pants, and regain composure.
when somebody told me a ways back that that He sounded like a spooky ghost I fucking lost it. Still dig the voice, the godhead, the fandom (which is ridiculous) but hair not so much.
Best part about the video, the vinyl. Anybody spot Herm in all of that?
No Shit: the kid with the rediculous hair who asks Moz if he considers America "the new Britain" tried out for a band I had around that time. It didn't work out.

Sorry Cinnamon, I beg to differ. I have dibs on Morrissey and allother sexually ambiguous, androgynous, or outright gay pop stars & rockers for all LKO events…look at my history: Bowie, Bowie, Elton John…More Bowie. Maybe you could represent the neglected lesbians in rock at the next LKO and do…oh, i dunno, Melissa Etheridge or The Indigo Girls maybe?
….but they're NEVER any fun! A buddy of mine (gay) had a pretty hilarious short film that a lesbian friend of his made about how you can't even escape the patriarchy through homosexuality because (mind you, this is according to the movie and we all know it;'s not comprehensive) the gay male culture is heavily focused on having ridiculous amounts of fun come hell or high water, while the lesbian culture tends to revolve around herbal tea and deep discussions about wimmin issues. Her film was a call for lesbians to loosen up, have more parties that prompt visits from the police, more loose sex….and better music. THROWAWAYYOURHOLLYNEARRECORDS!
Ha. Camille Paglia wrote something about that difference between lesbian and gay cultures. Something like "If ancient Rome had been run by lesbians instead of gay men, all we'd have to show for it today is softball."
I remember Silver Haired Matt. He contributed many fine Blueberry Cheese Crowns to the Flipside staff. How could you not love Matt?
Morrisey - "undocumented, if that is a word." Wow. If you don't want to be famous, stop being in bands. When I saw the Smiths in 86 he ran off the stage post haste when any one of the unwashed masses broke security. If only there was a laser beam to keep them away.
Indeed, I loved that boy! he showed up to the Flaming Lips Halloween show in a TOTALPEEWEEHERMANOUTFIT!!!!!! COMPLETEWITHGEHLITTLEPLASTICPUMPKINPAIL! That sealed it. I platonically loved him forever.

Dingy, now that you mention the streiotypes between lesbos culture and gay culture it’s amazing. What does this say? that the “liberated” male is totaly fun and silly, and the woman angry and violent? Were the amazons lesbians, Killing and pillanging to thier little heart’s content? Funny though… the actual lesbinas I know are fairly well adjusted, not like thier famous counterparts.
lesbians dont like me much……you would think i would have at least one lesbian girlfriend…..nope…..i want one…..i do have a co=worker who is cool…..perhaps i'll court her for a new friendship beyond general work pleasantries….
lesbian music is the worst….followed directly by gay music…..they are polar opposites…..i thought it would be sweet to go to wimmmins fest….i was told they dont let men in……transgender ladies are even shunned….ugh…..i hate being excluded…think of all the boobies i could see…..i like boobs…..but the music would induce heckles…..then i would get my ass kicked…..so its probably for the best…..i have met some fun lezbeans….they were all about "fuck it"…..which i adore….so yes…i need a lesbian friend……thats my new years revolution/resolution…..

It was something about boobs, wasn’t it.
I was thinking, of course they’re not going to let Paddle in, no matter what, basically because he is a man who likes boobs. That’s what militant lesbianism has led to.

hey I saw the most live lesbian boobs I have ever seen back in '00 when paddle took me to the 'clothing optional' bar at Key West. The dude sitting nekkid on the bar with his little tea bag hanging down (yes, that's ON the bar, his stuff was right at eye level) didn't arouse me though it was fascinating in a way…

While I am tolerant of all lifestyles/dresscodes, I demand that there be no teabagging of the eating surfaces. Remember that Iron Chef when that asshole Bobby Flay stood on the countertops, offending all of Japan? No feet, no ballsack, no taint, ass, etc. anywhere in contact with an area where I may be eating or drinking. Just call me uptight.
I've had a few lesbian friends. They were more cool with my foul-mouthed loutishness because they knew that I was a sweet fucking Sugar Bear underneath. but they'd still give me the stink eye when I'd demand that they do the active duty/frontline shit in Iraq, carry me down a ladder from a burning building, and fight for my right to carry a baby with or without a womb.
Mickey, you should SEE the lesbian folk albums I keep finding.
Last year, the library picked up a documentary called “Radical Harmonies”, which focuses on the “women’s music” folkie-based genre that bloomed in the ‘70’s (learn a little bit more about it at http://www.woman-vision.org/radicalharmonies/index.htm ). Could give you some good background on all those Olivia Records scores, UE. I suppose that scene seems as quaint now as the Treniers’ take on R&B.
"Last year, the library picked up a documentary called "Radical Harmonies" I eyeballed that a number of times but never picked it up though I was interested in the history, yet couldn't get past the radical harmonies I'd imagined I would hear.
A lot of the lesbian and gay music that is made for lesbian and gay music lovers sits the same way as say Christian rock. I can appreciate the sentiment of the lyrics but the music justs ends up sounding hokey to me. Now on the other hand I do like a lot of music made by christians and gay and lesbian dudes: The Dicks, Big Boys, Le Tigre, Codename:Gondola, Husker Du etc.

Yeah, Timh and others have hit upon an interesting point - and you see this not ONLY in the arena of music, because you can transpose this criticism to any of the arts - it's not so much the idea of "gay" music, "lesbian" music, "feminist" music, whatever (any kind of -ist, -ism or "subcategory"). It's not so much the idea that all those groups have something to "call their own" - hell, there's nothing inherently wrong with that (in fact I think that's a good thing if those participants feel it is something that's needed) - but, all too often what seems to happen is, the artists, poets, lyricists, directors, etc, that work within one of these groups merely need to throw out a few cliched symbols/expressions and they are heralded as a "genius" by their ready-made audience. In other words, it sort of queers the whole idea of aesthetics and criticism (no pun intended!). . .
Whether its good music or bad music I dont get why music by gay and lesbian singers has to be labeled as "gay music". To me thats like labeling Dion & The Belmonts as "Italian music" because of their ethnic background.

It’s all about aiming for a “culture,” or marketing toward a specific group. So gays can get their own culture, instead of all that hetero culture. But that seems to come down to disco and divas for the dudes, or folk music for the lesbians. All I know is that my good buddy John Waters once said, “A gay man loving Judy (Garland) would be like a black person watching a minstrel show.”
hilarious!
