…because it is so literal. I realized last night that I was starting to feel more at home here because we literally put down some roots yesterday: basil, thyme, leeks, rosemary, lettuce, parsley, chives, and oregano.

OMG OMG OMG!
I was just using my garden weasel (or whatever that blue thing is called) today! (It was offered to me at my grandma’s estate sale. I was like, what was gramma doing with this telemercial piece of goofiness? but I use it all the time. It’s my favorite tool, next to my fancy-pants pruners.) Also, I think I spy an awesome Buddha! Richard just got me one this week. He’s guarding the Eiffel tower of Herbs, which hasn’t been planted quite yet. Michigan “frost free” date isn’t until May 27, but you have a 50% chance of no 32 degree nights at May 11, so I might shoot for that instead.
The garden is looking good. I now demand status updates on the aloe.
OMG!
The aloe are totally bonkers! I don’t think either one of us has even bothered to water them since we moved in, but they’re going great guns. We also were worried that Eartha might try to pee in that indoor planter, but she’s given no indication. I think it may be to our benefit that the dirt in that thing is total hard-pan. Also, I put her food and water right in front of it and, you know, don’t poop in your dining room, you know?
Those aloe somehow managed to survive for so many years only getting one or two waterings a year, I think our frequent visits over the last 6 months or so have really made em all robust as hell! I’ll get some pictures taken for you, Wiz!
all hail the garden weasel!
Ours gets occasional use, though I think with all the Star Wars talk Kap’n Jr.’s been bringing home, we’ll soon be seeing it in use as some kind of (non-gardening) weapon.
ALOE
Still robust as all hell.
The poor flower bed, however, is totally covered with weeds. We had a monsoon season, and all my previous work was wiped out. I really need to get back at it, but it kinda feels like a losing battle right now. Still, I want to free up my leeks enough for them to at least produce some little leeks for me! They’re getting bigger! LEEEKS I TELL YOU LEEKS! Mmmmmmm.
